At the Break of Dawn

“Three extremists start a revolution”

Red Queen Theatre

In August 2015, three conspirators reunite hours before their revolution is scheduled to start – a civil servant, a devoted idealist and a genius computer programmer.

For the past three years, they have been setting up a revolution using an algorithm that tells them how to control the future. As the trio waits, secrets from their years apart are revealed, and they turn against each other. With the government about to fall, they start to question why they are seeking revolution – and what it can hope to achieve.

A political tragedy for the digital age, At the Break of Dawn comes to Edinburgh straight from its sell-out German tour. Grappling with how we deal with extremists and the lure of security, and the role of algorithms in our lives, the play marks the Edinburgh debut of Red Queen Theatre - a new Anglo-German company.

A key part of their methods is to follow every performance with a conversation with the audience. This means that they do more than pay lip service to the idea of prompting discussions with the audience, and actively encourage it. Through this, people of different viewpoints are able to debate their own interpretations and ideas with each other, and give their own interpretation of the play.
