SUMMARY

Award-winning Scottish musician Mairi Campbell brings Pulse, her first one-woman theatre show to the Old Lab, Summerhall (Venue 26) as part of this year’s Made in Scotland Showcase at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Mairi’s story of her musical homecoming is a journey of the heart, as she breaks away from the stifling autocracy of the professional orchestral world in search of a different sky. Pulse charts her passionate and, sometimes, painful journey of discovery to love and danger in Mexico and continues as she traces the footsteps of the 40,000 Scots who emigrated to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on her quest to find her ‘pulse’.

Breathing life into a variety of curious and colourful characters, the show weaves together live viola and voice with animation, movement and story-telling in compelling performance. Co-devised and directed by Kath Burlinson, Mairi’s transition from musical to theatrical performance marks her out as a unique voice in this year’s Fringe programme.

Pulse is deeply touching, funny and potent; a journey of rediscovery and coming back to our authentic selves, it captures the struggle between long-established traditions and the need to find flow and new forms.

With Scotland too finding her feet, her inner strength and her pulse, Mairi’s show reverberates with contemporary resonance and connects with what is happening across the country socially, culturally and politically here and now.
