SUMMARY

John Osborne’s handling of misogany and sexual inequality continues to trigger restless unease in its contemporary audience as Jimmy and Alison reveal some uncomfortable truths about what holds a relationship together. When this iconic play was first staged at the Royal Court, no-one quite like Jimmy had ever been portrayed on the English stage, yet how well known he is to all of us: a man whose wit and capability for affection make him irresistible, but whose restless dissatisfaction with himself makes him turn with violence on those who love him.
