Black is the Color Of My Voice

‘Freedom is no fear’ Nina Simone

By popular demand Black is the Color Of My Voice returns Gilded Balloon (Billiard Room) from Wednesday 5 – Monday 31 August, 13.15. This one woman show is inspired by a poiniant time in the life of singing legend Nina Simone.

'a moving portrayal' 4 stars, The Times

Written and performed by Shanghai based singer and actress, Apphia Campbell, this theatre piece with music portrays a jazz musician and civil rights activist called 'Mena Bordeaux' as she undergoes a spiritual cleansing following the untimely death of her father. During a three-day period of isolation without cigarettes, alcohol, or access to the outside world, Mena reflects on the journey that took her from a young piano prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.

‘The renditions of Nina Simone songs are worth the ticket price alone…… her importance within the civil rights movement is worked seamlessly through the performance’. Edinburgh Festivals Magazine
