“A show that #defythenorm and a universal story of “otherness””

Nigel Miles-Thomas

Canny Creatures

The Elephant Man by Canny Creatures, directed by Nigel Miles-Thomas, represents an original adaptation of the Victorian story based on the original diary of Frederick Treves, the famous surgeon who “rescued” John (Joseph)Merrick, The Elephant Man. The play deals with a very sensitive theme: the norm and the otherness. That is perfectly in line with the major theme of this Fringe Festival DEFYTHENORM. In this regard the show casts a strong light on the relationship between the surgeon and Merrick pointing out all the ethical and human implications of their relationship. Moreover, the production has a clear identity and a strong connection with the British Victorian Era and Edinburgh’s medical history which was a major source of inspiration for the creation of the show.
