SUMMARY

THE TRUTH ABOUT BLACK SUBURBAN GIRLS is written and performed by Liora Harvin. This is an autobiographical coming of age story about a girl wrestling with her Black and Latina middle class American roots while growing up in White 1980’s suburbia told through narrative, dance and song. Harvin, a classically trained actor, musical theater performer, voice-over artist and playwright, has toured with national children’s theatrical productions and has appeared in classical theatrical showcases in London and New York. She is thrilled that this will be her first time participating in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

"Edinburgh is the largest theatrical fringe festival in the world,” Harvin said. “Being selected as one of the performers to present my original work at one of the premiere venues, the Spaces @ Surgeons’ Hall venue 53, is an honor and a wonderful opportunity to share my personal Black, Latina and American Suburban experience with the world.”

In addition to her excitement about participating in the world’s preeminent fringe festival, Harvin wanted to present a world view that is largely absent from both the American media and the American stage.

"There are fans of Black and Hispanic culture who wish to see stories about educated, middle-class people – stories that have been overlooked and underrepresented within the theatrical experience,” Harvin said. “We, too, have lives that are layered and can be expressed in an entertaining light-hearted way without tap dancing, literally and figuratively, around the extraordinary issues of this ordinary experience we call life."
