DugOut Theatre

DugOut Theatre presents two shows, Othello and Bouncers Remix at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer.

“This group bristles with talent and stage presence. All of them will make a mark in theatre” - The Stage.

“George Chilcott's ingenious direction... a commendation for ensemble acting” - Sunday Times.

DugOut Theatre, founded by George Chilcott and Ed Smith in 2009, is a Leeds based theatre group, returning to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe following their acclaimed production of Dealer’s Choice last year (“slick and impressive” - **** (FringeReview). DugOut Theatre has had a very busy and successful year, opening three shows and winning two awards at the National Student Drama Festival. They won the Best Ensemble award and George Chilcott collected the Director’s Guild Award for his work.

Othello, Shakespeare’s great renaissance tragedy, is reworked by DugOut Theatre with allusions to the Vietnam War. A dozen men in military uniform combine with the company’s finest female talent to depict famous scenes of jealousy, violence, love and conspiracy. All set to a soundscape of Buffulo Springfield and the fire of M16 rifles. Directed by Chilcott, the production is led Ekow Quartey (Othello) and Tom Black (Iago). A “bold retelling” (The Guardian).

Bouncers Remix comes complete with a winning combination of comedy and high drama delivered by four impressive young men. Actors switch between a plethora of characters such as imposing bouncers, girls looking for love, men looking for a quick poke and a smooth talking DJ. This is an hour of pure entertainment with a dark undercurrent. A Northern classic, DugOut’s Bouncers (directed by Tom Black) remixes John Godber’s script, adding sharp choreography and a memorable soundtrack to match.

“DugOut don’t just man the doors of the young Leeds Theatre scene, they are slowly becoming the very foundations of it” - **** (Fringe Review).
