SUMMARY

THE CAGEBIRDS FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO REMAIN IMPRISONED.

David Campton’s short play considers to what extent a prison is a sanctuary.

To be performed at The Greenside Venue 231, Royal Terrace, Edinburgh, from the 5th – 13th August 2011 at 1.35pm.

The Cagebirds, each one self involved and unmindful of the other, were contented to preen and gaze and chatter in their cage. The Great Guzzler fantasises about food, whilst The Mirror-Eyed Gazer considers only her reflection. The Medicated Gloom delivers advice about piles to the disappointment of The Long-Tongued Gossip, whose eavesdropping tendencies and stories are rather remarkable. The Constant Twitting is constantly afraid and The Regular Thump is a regularly enraged.

Each bird is content in their own world. That is, until The Wild One is thrown into the group after being ‘rescued’ by The Mistress. Discover the startling and unsettling change that takes place within the cage as the birds attempt to cope with the turbulent turn of events.

Directed by Gemma Sapp, ‘The Cagebirds’ is proudly brought to you by the Liverpool University Drama Society. The physical and comedic aspects of this largely monologue-based play instantly appealed to the often overly dramatic tendencies of the people in the society, and before long a cast was born.

Adopting the qualities of birds that the actors feel most complement their characters, all have worked to fluidly combine the physical side of their bird with their very human emotions.

The humour shines through in Campton’s script with the emphasis placed solely on the characterisation. The Mistress, played by Branwen Jones, although only a small character in comparison to the birds, is a formidable and unnerving presence, both feared and loved by her caged ‘sweeties’.

An absolute must-see performance.
