‘We will be looking out for this group with anticipation at The Fringe 2011’ – Sandi Hunter, ‘Hairline Review’.

Last year, Reading University Drama Society presented both The Talented Mr Ripley and Shakers to delighted audiences at the Fringe 2010. This year, they are back again, putting all their efforts into one great, entertaining and thought provoking show.

Originally written for radio, Cigarettes and Chocolate is the story of a group of friends trying to discover the secret behind one of their number’s act of silence. Is she hiding a secret? Suffering from a breakdown? Or is she just tired of words? Set in our busy, noisy, modern world, this play seeks to discover just how much meaning is behind the words we say, and does anyone actually listen anymore? Written by Anthony Minghella, the playwright also known for Truly, Madly, Deeply and director of the hit film The English Patient, the script is British creative talent at its best.

Building on the success of last year, Reading University Drama Society is proud to announce this poignant and deeply engaging observation of modern life. In an age of TVs, Ipods and smart phones, have we lost the true meaning of silence?

This piece uses naturalistic dialogue, as well as monologue and choreographed movement to convey the thoughts and emotions of the characters. You may warm to some more than others, but either way, their opinions should certainly leave a lasting impression.

Cigarettes and Chocolate is being performed from Monday 15th August- Saturday 20th August 2011 at 3.05pm, at theSpaces on the Mile.

Admission: £5 – £6.50(£5)
